ATHELSTAN MATHS CHALLENGES
As we look to next academic year it is exciting to announce the resurrection of the Athelstan
Maths Challenges that took place pre-pandemic at all schools in Athelstan. During the last 15
months, two more schools have joined the Athelstan family, giving us the opportunity to run
challenges with more year groups.
These challenges test students’ problem-solving skills in teams of 4 competing against the other
schools in Athelstan over four rounds to try and claim glory for their school! Teamwork,
collaboration and resilience are crucial as they compete to answer the group round,
crossnumber, shuttle and relay. They are given 20 minutes to complete a cross-number with a
twist (if you fancy giving one a go, see above), and the challenge day often finishes with the most
frantic round of all where students must work in pairs within their team to complete a question
before running across the hall to get the next question for their teammates to solve. It’s also a
great opportunity to get students from older year groups leading the organisation of the marking
and scoring as ‘Maths Leaders’.
Fingers crossed we will be able to
travel and experience the
enthusiasm and camaraderie of
previous years in a room all
together, but plan B is to go virtual!
